Who I Thought You Were

Santigold 99 Cents In the 1980s, advertisers discovered that consumers were more willing to purchase an item priced at 99 cents than $1. That sneaky sleight-of-hand endemic to advertising -- and now, to packaged, selfie-sticked social media narcissism -- is an undercurrent swirling the deeper waters of Santigold’s 99 Cents. Santigold, or Santi White, appears to splash around in more shallow waters as she appears on the album cover as a shrink-wrapped dime-store mannequin amidst ephemera ranging from gilded Crocs to white plastic keyboards, sneakers, plastic toys and baseball caps. The pool party continues with eclectic influences ranging from punk to percussive African music. Throughout, White’s saccharine crooning is offset by collaborations with musicians ILoveMakonnen, and Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and Hit-Boy.
